Despite high expectations, the 28-year-old managed only a handful of appearances and scored just three goals and was loaned to Middlesbrough in January.

Sevilla had initially signed Iheanacho to bolster their attack after a challenging season, but he was unable to cement his place in the starting line-up, which ultimately led to his contract termination.

Fan aims sly dig at Iheanacho

While Sevilla’s announcement was brief and respectful, reactions among Nigerian fans were anything but mild.

One supporter, identified as Val Chekwas, posted a sharp dig on X, writing:

“You can’t cheat nature. Come and rest senior man.”

The comment was widely interpreted as a suggestion that Iheanacho’s age has caught up with him.

Although Iheanacho is officially 28, critics have often questioned whether his physical decline is coming earlier than expected.

This remark quickly stirred debate, with some fans agreeing and arguing that the Super Eagles striker should consider winding down his career, instead of looking for a new club.

A look at Iheanacho’s rise to stardom

Iheanacho’s journey has been long and eventful, although the Nigerian could still sign for a new club, with Celtic one of the teams interested in the Nigerian forward, BBC reports.

The 28-year-old forward burst onto the spotlight during the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup, where he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player as Nigeria lifted the title.

His rise earned him a move to Manchester City, where he made his senior debut in 2015. He later joined Leicester City in 2017, scoring over 60 goals and winning the FA Cup in 2021.

Following Chekwas’ viral comment, more Nigerians weighed in. Some advised Iheanacho to begin preparing for life after football.

Odogwu Machalla tweeted:

“Someone that should be taking UEFA coaching courses already & figuring how to start an assistant coaching job in Europe asap.”
