Bruno Fernandes explains penalty miss

One of the talking points in the match was captain Bruno Fernandes skying a penalty in the first half after Calvin Bassey was penalised for a handball.

There was an issue between Fernandes and referee Chris Kavanaugh after the official bumped into the player, which he blamed for making him miss the spotkick.

“I was upset. As a penalty-taker, you have your own routines, your own things that you do,” he told Sky Sports after the match.
“It upset me because the referee didn’t apologise. That is what triggered me in that moment, but that’s not an excuse for missing the penalty.
“I had a very bad hit on the ball. I put my foot too under the ball, and that’s why it ended up going over the bar.”

“You needed to play a penalty, instead of focusing on that he's more worried about the referee clashing with him ended up shooting the ball like an amateur.”

“No way he has an excuse for missing a penalty. The ref has done enough by gifting you the penalty, and as a player, you are meant to be completely zoned in before taking it, regardless of what's going on around. This is not how a captain should respond.”

“People were holding this guy up as a great captain, and here he is blaming the ref for the reason he put the penalty into someone's backyard.”
“Bruno owned up to the miss, which is fair, but blaming the ref for not apologising feels a bit odd. At the end of the day, penalties come down to composure; he’ll know he has to do better next time.”

Amorim reacts to Fernandes’ penalty miss

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim did not dwell on the penalty miss because he believes Fernandes was sad at the miss because of how responsible he is.

“In the first half we were there, we missed a penalty...Fernandes has so much responsibility with him that I felt the lack of joy [when he missed] and he was thinking in the past. Now we have to move forward no matter what happens,” he told BBC Sports.

The Red Devils face Grimsby next in the second round of the League Cup, before returning to Old Trafford to face newly-promoted Burnley at the weekend.
