Medical setback derails transfer

Boniface underwent a series of tests at La Madonnina clinic and Galeazzi Hospital over a 48-hour period in Milan, per Get Football reports.

However, AC Milan’s medical team raised red flags regarding the Nigerian striker’s fitness, particularly related to his right knee.

The 24-year-old has a history of serious injuries, including two cruciate ligament tears during his time at Bodø/Glimt in 2019 and recurring muscle problems.

Despite AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen agreeing on a loan deal with a €30 million purchase option, the Rossoneri opted not to take the risk after receiving negative medical reports.

This decision leaves Boniface facing uncertainty over his immediate future as he returns to Leverkusen, where competition for a starting spot is fierce.

Why Milan backed out of the deal

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Milan’s doctors were not satisfied with Boniface’s physical condition, which ultimately stalled the transfer.

While his form in the Bundesliga has been impressive, the long-term risks attached to his fitness profile forced the Italian giants to adopt a cautious stance.

Simon Rolfes, Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director, also confirmed that Milan’s decision effectively closes the chapter on this transfer, Simpre Milan reports.

“If Boniface comes back to Leverkusen, the AC Milan deal will be over. That’s no big secret. Renegotiating the deal? I don’t think that will happen,” Rolfes stated.

The German club has hinted that Boniface’s condition has improved since his last injury setbacks, but AC Milan are unwilling to gamble on a player with such a complex medical history.

What next for Boniface?

Boniface now faces a challenging situation at Bayer Leverkusen, where strikers Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane are ahead of him in the pecking order.

The Nigerian international, who was recently demoted to a third-choice striker, will need to prove both his fitness and his quality to force his way back into Erik ten Hag’s plans.

For AC Milan, the failed transfer means looking elsewhere to strengthen their attacking line before the new season kicks off.
