A public affairs analyst, Donald Okwuosa, said Peter Obi has no fewer than seven hurdles to cross if he is to become Nigeria’s president in 2027.

Okwuosa said Obi has to start by clinching the ADC presidential ticket in a contest with former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, and others.

He said Obi’s first hurdle will be to persuade Atiku to drop his presidential ambition for him.

The public administrator stated this during an exclusive chat with Legit.ng over the weekend.

Okwuosa said the delegates are the second hurdle Obi needs to overcome to get his presidential ambition active and strong.

He highlighted Obi’s quality of being economical and avoiding wasting money as another hurdle in the 2027 election.

“The first hurdle Peter Obi needs to cross is getting Atiku and other interested candidates to give up their ambition and have him clinch the ADC Presidential Ticket.
“Secondly, delegates. If Atiku and others refuse to step aside, it would be the delegates. Getting to convince the delegates to vote for him during the party primary.
“Thirdly, Peter Obi's frugality won't let him give any delegate a dime to influence their support for him. Judging by the level of corruption in Nigeria's political spheres, delegates usually vie for the highest bidder. Hence, the slogan "money for hand, back for bed"

Speaking further, he mentioned finance, an area in which Atiku appears stronger than Obi.

He also said the prominence of the ADC is important if the party is to defeat President Bola Tinubu of the APC in 2027.

“Fourthly, finance. ADC is not a known party, thanks to the coalition, which made it a bit popular. Should the party pick Peter Obi and Atiku and his loyalists (which we all know are the money bags to finance the party) pull off their financial support, ADC, as a baby party, may not have enough resources to fund the movement.
“Fifthly, prominence. ADC is barely known by Nigerians. Unlike the Labour Party, which gained prominence through Obi. ADC lacks structure. Joining the ADC is like starting from scratch after pulling the Labour Party from a debased state to the limelight.
“In other words, building a strong grassroots organization to mobilize voters and win an election becomes tantamount to a repeat of the process.”

He said Obi has already built momentum and is still growing massively in support.

The political analyst said, no doubt, Obi has become a national figure, but that alone cannot give him the presidential seat.

“Sixthly, followership. Obi garnered massive followers under the flag of the Labour Party and is still growing his support base. Leaving the Labour party to ADC can affect his support base because most of his key supporters are already well rooted in that Labour party and hold positions, which they wouldn't just let go. Moving to the ADC, where positions are already shared, would make them political JJCs.
“Lastly, unity. Having come from different parties with divided interests to form this coalition, Obi needs a lot of work in uniting the party. He must be ready to bend certain principles to accommodate all. Politics is all about interests. Amidst those diversities, there must be unity for the party to thrive.”

He concluded by saying Obi needs a good platform, well-structured and financed, to power him to Aso Rock in 2027.
