2027 elections: List of southern politicians who may emerge PDP presidential candidate

2027 elections: List of southern politicians who may emerge PDP presidential candidate

  • The PDP has zoned its presidential ticket in the 2027 election to the south, leading to a new political alignment and realignment in the party
  • This is different from the scenario that led to the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 elections
  • With the new development in the PDP, some prominent politicians have been fingered as having the chances of emerging as the party's presidential candidates in the 2027 poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the south, a development that gave a direction to the party ahead of the next cycle of elections in the country.

Unlike the 2023 general election, where the PDP threw its presidential ticket open ahead of the poll, and the ticket was eventually won by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which marked the beginning of a crisis in the party, the leading opposition party appeared to be changing its game ahead of the 2027 election.

With the presidential ticket being zoned to the south, several southern politicians are expected to jostle to be the presidential candidate of the party in the 2027 election.

The prominent among them are:

Goodluck Jonathan

The former president was being tipped to be the PDP presidential candidate in the 2027 election. This was due to the fact that Jonathan only had the chance of contesting for one term since he had once been elected.

Many PDP chieftains, particularly from the northern bloc, believe that the northern bloc would not have a problem when it was its turn to produce the next president. Meanwhile, Debo Ologunagba, the PDP spokesperson, recently explained that the former president has not resigned from the party.

Peter Obi

The Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate has been said to be contemplating returning to the PDP and becoming the party's flagbearer. He had met with Bala Mohammed, the chairman of the PDP governorship forum and governor of Bauchi, on two occasions this year.

Seyi Makinde

The governor of Oyo state has been tipped by his supporters to be the PDP presidential flagbearer in the 2027 election. While the governor has always maintained a neutral position about the 2027 poll, many of his political moves have suggested he was in for the contest.

Seyi Makinde has moved to stabilise the PDP and is currently at loggerheads with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who was his ally in the 2023 struggle in the PDP. Wike is obviously eyeing the PDP presidential ticket as well, but has vowed to lead President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign in the 2027 elections.

2027 election: Prophet Iginla predicts possible winner

Legit.ng earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu's chances in the 2027 election have been predicted in a fresh prophetic message by Prophet Joshua Iginla.

The cleric urged opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to work together if they want to defeat Tinubu in 2027.

It would be recalled that Prophet Iginla had correctly predicted the victory of President Tinubu in the 2023 presidential polls.
