2027 Election: Did Obasanjo Nominate Lamido as Jonathan's VP? Ex-Gov Finally Opens Up
- Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was speculated to have nominated Sule Lamido, ex-Jigawa governor, to be running mate to one-term president Goodluck Jonathan in 2027
- Lamido, while describing the speculation as false, maintained that Obasanjo remained his political leader and that his relationship with him was intertwined
- This came days after the former governor tipped Jonathan as the best bet for the PDP and the best candidate to defeat President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 presidential election
Sule Lamido, the former governor of Jigawa and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has denied knowing about the speculation linking him to a possible vice-presidential ticket with former president Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 election.
Former president Olusegun Obasanjo was speculated to have nominated the former governor of Jigawa in his calculation to oust President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general elections.

Lamido keeps mum on 2027 ambition
Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust, Lamido said he would not respond to the question because he was hearing it for the first time and would not respond to a matter he did not know about.
He maintained that he also questions the authenticity of things ascribed to the former president when he had not heard it from him directly. He maintained that his relationship with Obasanjo was intertwined and that he was hearing about the nomination for the first time.
He added that "OBJ was my president, my political leader in government, and politically, he remains my leader."
The former governor maintained that if the claim was true, he would have heard of it from the former president and not from the journalist or the media.
Lamido tips Jonathan for 2027 election
This came days after Lamide said Jonathan would be the best bet for the PDP to sack President Tinubu and the ruling APC in the 2027 general election.
He had called on the leading opposition party to make a deliberate push to ensure that the ex-president returns to the PDP, stating that no current PDP member from the southern bloc has the kind of experience of Jonathan.
Lamido made the call while speaking on Channels TV's Politics Today, adding that Nigerians would support anyone that the PDP put forward in the 2027 presidential election.
His statement reads in part:
“I think for PDP now they should try to woo him (Jonathan). He is their best bet. Anybody put forth by the PDP, Nigerians will support him”.
The former governor then described Jonathan as a leader who is well-grounded in governance, with the experience of ruling the country before and working with others.
