The battle for power in Zamfara

The battle for power in Zamfara has become intense since the PDP defeated the APC in the 2023 governorship election in the state. Bello Matawalle, the incumbent governor, who was defeated in the election, is now serving as the Minister of Defence under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

On the other hand, Dauda Lawal, the PDP candidate who defeated Matawalle in the 2023 election, has accused his predecessor of fueling insecurity in the state and called on President Tinubu to sack him from his ministerial position.

The supplementary election serves as a test of strength for Lawal and Matawalle ahead of the 2027 general election, where both of them could be running for a second term in office.
