FCT, Abuja - Several social media posts claim that Ayodele Fayose, a former governor of Ekiti, has predicted that Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), will defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The claim was well circulated, especially on the social networking service, Facebook.

Part of the post, dated Monday, June 30, 2025, quotes Fayose as saying:
“The Peter Obi I know – along with his supporters – will unseat Tinubu in 2027.”
The claim can also be seen here and here.
But did Fayose made such a statement? Legit.ng checked.
Fake quotes attributed to Fayose
On Tuesday, July 1, Fayose took to his verified X (formerly known as Twitter) account to debunk the claim.
The 64-year-old estranged Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) member published a screenshot of the claim and labelled it “fake news”.
Legit.ng, therefore, reports that the quote attributed to Fayose about Obi democratically unseating President Tinubu in the 2027 election is fabricated.
2027 election: Fayose tips Tinubu for victory
In late July, Fayose confidently predicted that President Tinubu will win the 2027 election.
He noted that the president needs only “little votes” from the north to secure victory, adding that he (President Tinubu) has already gained the support of the south.

Speaking on the chances of Tinubu, Fayose declared that the incumbent Nigerian leader has successfully dominated the southern region politically and will only require a modest performance in the north to emerge victorious.
Fayose is a known supporter of President Tinubu.
Fayose to work against Atiku
In April, Fayose reiterated his opposition to Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ambition, declaring that he will once again work against the former vice president if he decides to contest in the 2027 presidential election.
Fayose emphasised the importance of respecting power rotation in Nigeria, even if informally agreed upon.
Where does Peter Obi lean towards?
In July, some Nigerian politicians, drawn from various political parties in the country, recently formed the National Opposition Coalition Group to unseat President Tinubu in the 2027 election.
The group adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections.
Obi and Atiku are among those leading the coalition group.
Apart from the two political heavyweights, other promoters of the coalition platform include former Governors Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of Kaduna state, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi of oil-rich Rivers state, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, and Sule Lamido of Jigawa state.
A former senate president, David Mark, and an ex-governor of Osun state, Rauf Aregbesola, were appointed as the ADC interim national chairman and secretary, respectively.
Obi not interested in coup
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Valentine Obienyem, media aide to Obi, denied allegations that his principal plans to organise a one-million-man march against President Tinubu’s administration and topple it.
Obienyem said it is absurd and dangerous for anyone to insinuate that Obi is plotting with his allies to overthrow President Tinubu’s government.
