Gov Sani Approves New CONHESS Pay, Hazard Allowance for Kaduna Health Workers
- Governor Uba Sani has approved the implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and hazard allowance
- The decision ends years of agitation and strikes by medical professionals who had long complained of poor pay
- The approval also covers the replacement of departed staff to ease workload pressure
Health workers in Kaduna state have welcomed a long-awaited breakthrough after Governor Uba Sani approved the implementation of the 2024 Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) and hazard allowance, effective September 2025.
The announcement was made at a press briefing in Kaduna by the chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Comrade Ishaku Yakubu, who described the development as a turning point for health professionals in the state.

Doctors relieved after allowance approval
According to Yakubu, the decision ended years of agitation and industrial actions.
“This is quite commendable and timely because it is something we have been struggling to get for about three to four years. At some points, we had to go on warning strikes and even indefinite strike with the previous administration,” he said.
Health workers in Kaduna, he noted, had for years been among the lowest paid in the country, a situation that forced many to migrate to neighbouring states, federal institutions, and private hospitals.
He explained that the new approval had restored hope among practitioners and would help reduce the exodus of skilled professionals.
“With this approval, His Excellency has heard our cry and graciously approved the implementation of the 2024 CONHESS and hazard allowance with immediate effect. This has brought relief to us and restored hope in Kaduna’s health system,” Yakubu added.

He also thanked members of the association for their resilience throughout the struggle.
Yakubu assured that the decision would be met with renewed dedication from health workers.
“We want to assure the governor that this gesture will result in more efficiency and productivity from health workers in Kaduna State. We promise to support him in whatever he is doing to succeed,” he pledged.
He further revealed that part of the governor’s approval included a policy to replace outgoing health workers.
“In our committee, we recommended that when one health worker leaves, two should be employed to replace them. The governor has approved this, and we expect immediate implementation so that those left behind are not overburdened,” he explained.
Yakubu urged the government to continue ongoing renovations of secondary health facilities, ensuring that hospitals are not only refurbished but also well-equipped.
He cautioned that the union would monitor implementation closely. “If by the end of September it is not done, we will invite you, the press, again to say it has not been implemented,” he warned
