She made this known in a post shared via her Instagram handle @abikedabiri on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

The NIDCOM chairman said the young girl was subjected to modern-day slavery, her blood forcefully taken, and was working without pay.

“At just 20 years old, Mercy dropped out of school to support her sick mother and was lured with promises of greener pastures. Instead, she endured 1 year and 6 months of modern-day slavery, working without pay, maltreated, locked away, and even having her blood forcefully taken."

Dabiri-Erewa said Mercy lost her mother while trapped in Libya, making her story a painful reminder of the dangers of irregular migration.

She was quoted to have said:

“No matter your situation, please don’t take these dangerous routes. I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through.”

She disclosed that Dr. Segun Abraham of Trinity Foundation and NIDCOM, and the leadership of the Nigerian Community in Libya, rescued Mercy back home and ready to continue her education.
