In a viral video making the rounds on social media, the monarch, while speaking at a public gathering, said the accusations were fabricated by individuals he considered unfortunate, stressing that divine punishment awaited those who spread such rumours.

Oluwo declared that if he were indeed guilty of smoking marijuana, God should remove him from the throne, but insisted that the allegations were baseless.

The monarch said:

“They are lying against me. They are unfortunate people. Unless I am smoking marijuana, if I’m a smoker, God should remove me from this throne. You who are accusing me of being a smoker, God will punish you.”

This came a few days after the Court of Appeal upheld his enthronement as the paramount ruler of Iwoland, a development the monarch had earlier celebrated as a divine victory.

Following the ruling, Oba Akanbi expressed joy, declaring that his reign was ordained by God and could not be undermined by human efforts.

He also emphasised his commitment to defending Iwo’s cultural heritage while modernising traditions, noting that his reign had attracted federal presence to the town and reshaped its public image.

The monarch described his challengers in court as wasteful and maintained that their litigations only served to strengthen his position on the throne.

Oluwo bans alcohol consumption in palace

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi prohibited alcohol intake within the palace premises, citing the need for a sacred environment.

The royal father's move has attracted praise and criticism, with some calling for a complete ban on substance abuse in the entire community.

This is coming seven years after he adopted the title of “emir of Yorubaland”. The emir title is peculiar to northern traditional rulers. He explained that the reason for his decision stating:

“When I was made the Oluwo of Iwo, I was turbaned. It is because Iwo is an ancient Islamic town. Iwo was known as ‘geri malami’, meaning: the home of the scholars. So, this regalia is appropriate for me as the Oluwo.”

On Tuesday, June 2, 2025, Oluwo said the title of Alaafin remains supreme among Yoruba traditional institutions, and he wants to be addressed as such. According to The Punch, the traditional ruler said his palace would inform the Osun state government of the new title he wished to be known as address as.
