The Federal Ministry of Environment’s National Flood Early Warning Center (FEW Center) has issued a fresh flood warning alert to Adamawa and eight other northern states, citing the likelihood of heavy rainfall and potential flooding between 25 and 29 August 2025.
In a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the ministry identified specific northern settlements at risk due to their geographic location and predicted weather patterns.

The alert, released in Abuja on Monday, placed Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano and Katsina States on red alert, urging immediate preparedness.
Bokani called on stakeholders across the affected regions to monitor developments closely and report any emerging situations. “Relevant stakeholders on the centre’s platform [should] give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states,” he stated.
Towns on red alert: Adamawa and Katsina lead the list
Adamawa and Katsina States were highlighted as having the highest number of towns under threat. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while Katsina town, Kaita and Bindawa were flagged in Katsina State.
Other towns identified include:
• Jigawa State: Gwaram
• Gombe State: Nafada
• Borno State: Ngala
• Kano State: Sumaila
• Zamfara State: Anka
• Sokoto State: Makira
Bauchi State was noted for two vulnerable areas—Azare and Jama’are—both placed on the FEW Center’s watchlist.
Previous alerts and river Niger concerns
This latest warning follows a similar alert issued just last week, in which the FEW Center advised communities along the flood plains of River Niger—from Jebba to Lokoja—to evacuate due to rising water levels. The advisory covered towns in seven northern states and underscored the growing urgency of flood preparedness across the region.
The FEW Center continues to monitor rainfall patterns and river levels, urging residents and local authorities to remain vigilant and responsive to evolving conditions.

Yobe flood disaster kills 7
Legit.ng earlier reported that a devastating flash flood has swept through several communities in Yobe State, displacing no fewer than 4,521 households and claiming at least seven lives, according to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The disaster, which followed a recent windstorm and widespread flooding across the north-eastern state, has prompted an urgent humanitarian response. Mohammed Goje, Executive Secretary of SEMA, disclosed the figures while briefing journalists on the unfolding situation. He stated that the agency, in collaboration with other relevant bodies, had activated emergency measures to support affected residents.
Goje reported that on 15 August, a flash flood in Potiskum Local Government Area (LGA) impacted 21 settlements across five wards, displacing 1,261 households—amounting to 12,470 individuals. He added that despite 85 per cent of the homes being mud structures and heavily damaged, families received swift relief supplies, healthcare, and reintegration assistance.
