He warned that the cost of goods and services would continue to climb, making everyday essentials increasingly unaffordable for many citizens.

According to the cleric, inflation was not merely an economic issue but a sign of deeper global instability. He claimed that the world was approaching its “end time,” and that hardship would remain a defining feature of life for Nigerians and people in other nations.

Hardship and poverty: Call for action beyond prayer

The pastor urged Nigerians to prepare for continued economic difficulty, stressing that prayer alone would not be sufficient to overcome poverty. In his message, he encouraged citizens to embrace hard work and resilience as practical tools for survival.

He also addressed the role of wealth distribution, asserting that no amount of generosity from the rich could eliminate poverty entirely.

“There will always be poor people among us,” he said, suggesting that systemic challenges and individual effort must both be considered in addressing economic inequality.

The forecast of a 30% rice price increase comes at a time when food inflation remains a pressing issue in Nigeria, making the pastor’s remarks particularly resonant.

As the country grapples with economic uncertainty, the pastor’s message has added a spiritual and philosophical dimension to the national conversation on inflation, poverty, and resilience.

Food inflation

Under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has witnessed a sharp rise in food commodity inflation, with rates surging from 24.82% in May 2023 to nearly 40.66% by May 2024.

Despite securing billions in agricultural loans and investments, the cost of staple items such as rice, maize, and tomatoes has skyrocketed, with tomatoes alone rising by over 320%. Tinubu’s promises to cultivate 500,000 hectares of farmland and improve food security have yet to yield visible relief.

Factors such as fuel subsidy removal, naira devaluation, and insecurity have further exacerbated the crisis, leaving many Nigerians struggling to afford basic necessities.
