The state commander of the Hisbah, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, announced the initiative on Tuesday at the Police Headquarters in Bompai.
The announcement coincided with a ceremony where over 1,000 former thugs publicly renounced their violent ways, pledging to embrace peace and contribute to the security of Kano.
Sheikh Daurawa framed the mass wedding as part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf's broader plan to improve the lives of the state's youth.
“This is part of the Kano state governor, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf’s plan to improve the lives of youths, and provide a better second chance for them to be more productive, and contribute to the development of the state,” Daurawa stated.
He urged the repentant individuals to remain responsible and exhibit good behavior as they transition into their new lives.
The Commander also extended an appeal to those still engaged in violent activities, calling on them to lay down their arms and join the initiative for a more peaceful society.
Residents react to Hisbah's move
While the Hisbah Board has not yet announced a specific date for the mass wedding ceremony, the announcement has however sparked a range of reactions from Kano residents.
Mallam Ibrahim Sani, Teacher in Nasarawa LGA describe this as a welcome development.
“For years, these youths have been a source of fear for many of us. If this program can successfully turn them away from crime and towards building families and, a stable life, then the government and Hisbah deserve our full support.”
“It is a practical solution that addresses their need for belonging and responsibility,” he added.
