NBA Condemns Assault On Anambra Corps Member in Viral Video, Demands Suspects' Prosecution

The Nigerian Bar Association has condemned the recent attack on National Youth Service Corps member Jennifer Elobor by security personnel in Anambra, calling for the prosecution of individuals involved in the act, which it termed "inhumane".

The NBA voiced its concerns in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, posted on its official X.com page, signed by its President Afam Osigwe and National Secretary Mobolaji Ojibara, expressing disapproval of the action, labelling it a "direct violation of her dignity and fundamental human rights and describing the treatment as "barbaric".

According to the statement, the NBA commended the Anambra State government's swift intervention and response to the public outcry.
“The NBA commends the Anambra State Government for its swift action in identifying and arresting the operatives responsible. This decisive move reflects commendable responsiveness to public outrage,” NBA expressed.
“However, accountability must not stop at arrest. The NBA insists that the perpetrators must be promptly and diligently prosecuted in accordance with the law. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done, to serve as both redress for Ms. Elobor and deterrence against similar abuses in the future,” it added.
Security operatives stripped female corps member naked
The incident came to light after a video went viral on Tuesday, August 19, showing the armed operatives storming a corps members' lodge, accusing occupants of being internet fraudsters despite their NYSC identification and uniforms.

In the video, Elobor was beaten repeatedly, her clothes torn in the process, leaving her exposed.
Despite her cries for help, the operatives continued to assault her, sparking outrage on social media. Many Nigerians have since demanded justice for the victim.

However, the NBA said the incident “highlights the urgent need for comprehensive training, reorientation, and continuous capacity-building of security operatives, as it pledges to pursue justice for Elobor.
Police react to assault on female corps member in video
Legit.ng previously reported that the Anambra state police command has confirmed the assault on a NYSC member, identified as Jennifer Elobor, by members of the state security outfit.
The police stated that the ongoing investigation into the assault and public stripping of Elobor by vigilante members has been hampered due to her failure to appear. The command revealed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, signed by its public relations officer, Tochukwu Ikenga.

The government confirmed that those responsible for the act had been identified, arrested, and placed in detention pending investigations.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, described the assault as “unfortunate and unacceptable.”
