Breaking: ASUU, SSANU Declare Indefinite Strike as LASU Shuts Down Varsity

The staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) have declared an indefinite strike, plunging the institution into a shutdown just days before scheduled examinations.

The decision was taken by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

In a joint statement dated July 31, 2025, addressed to the vice-chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, and seen by our correspondent on Friday, August 1, the unions said they could no longer continue working under unresolved conditions.

LASU staff ordered to vacate campuses

According to the letter, all staff members across the university’s main campus and affiliate institutions, including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and LASU Epe campus, have been directed to withdraw their services and vacate duty posts immediately, Nation reported.

The release was signed by key union leaders: ASUU-LASU Chairman, Prof. Ibrahim A. Bakare; ASUU Secretary, Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu; SSANU Chairman, Oluwaseyi Lawal; and SSANU Secretary, Waheed Majekodunmi.

The joint statement read:

“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions (ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU & NASU-LASU) that an INDEFINITE STRIKE ACTION should commence effective from Thursday, 31st July 2025, we write to notify you that the indefinite strike action has COMMENCED in Lagos State University.
“The strike action will be in force INDEFINITELY until all the demands of staff members are met by the appropriate authorities.”

The unions expressed appreciation to the management for previous support, but stated firmly that normal operations will not resume until all issues are resolved, Punch reported.

LASU students’ exams disrupted

The indefinite action has come at a critical time, as students were scheduled to begin their second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 session on Monday.

The sudden shutdown has left many students confused and anxious about the new turn of events.

One student, who pleaded anonymity, said,

“We were already preparing for exams when we heard the strike news. It’s frustrating, especially for final-year students.”

As of press time, the university management has yet to issue a formal response to the strike declaration.

Nonpayment of salaries: ASUU takes action against FG

Previously, Legit.ng reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) took a significant step against the federal government, implementing a no-pay-no-work policy in response to the ongoing delay in the payment of salaries for its members.
