Muhammadu Buhari (1942–2025) was a Nigerian military officer and politician who served as both military head of state (1983–1985) and civilian president (2015–2023).
Born in Daura, Katsina State, he joined the Nigerian Army in 1962 and rose through the ranks, participating in key national events including the Nigerian Civil War and several coups.
As military ruler, he launched the “War Against Indiscipline” to combat corruption, though his regime was criticized for authoritarian practices. After years in retirement, Buhari returned to politics and won the presidency in 2015 under the All Progressives Congress, becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent.
His administration focused on anti-corruption, infrastructure, and security, though faced challenges with economic downturns and rising insecurity.
Known for his austere lifestyle and firm leadership style, Buhari passed away in London on July 13, 2025, at age 82, and was buried in his hometown of Daura.
