NNPC Reduces Fuel Prices Ahead of Public Holiday on Friday

  • The new price of petrol has emerged at some filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited
  • The new price reflected a N15 reduction from the previous price in Lagos, while prices in Abuja remained unchanged
  • The federal government has declared Friday a public holiday to mark the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

Some Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited retail stations in Lagos are selling petrol at N850 per litre.

This was observed around the Idimu-Ejigbo area of Lagos despite several others selling at N865 per litre on Wednesday, September 3.

It is unclear if the changes will be implemented in other outlets, but the new price is a N15 reduction and makes NNPC the cheapest place to buy petrol ahead of the holiday.

The federal government declared Friday, September 5, 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW), BusinessDay reports.

This was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Magdalene Ajani, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, on behalf of Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Minister of Interior.

According to the statement, the government congratulated Muslims across Nigeria and the diaspora on the occasion, urging them to uphold the Prophet’s exemplary values of peace, love, humility, tolerance, and compassion.

Eid-ul-Mawlid, observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar (Rabi’ al-Awwal), marks the birth of Prophet Muhammad.

The statement read.

“The Minister of Interior wishes Muslims a joyous and peaceful Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration."

Nigerians traveling to meet their loved ones during the holiday will be hoping the price reduction is implemented in more filling stations.

Also, Ardova Plc and Mobil filling stations have reduced petrol price to N860 per litre.

Dangote gives update fuel distribution plan

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the Dangote Petroleum Refinery experienced delays in the rollout of its fuel distribution plan using Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, had planned to begin nationwide trucking of petroleum products from the $20 billion Lekki-based refinery on August 15, 2025.

The refinery’s target customers for the scheme included marketers, petrol dealers, manufacturers, telecom firms, aviation, and other large users
